Domonic Brown is out approximately four to six weeks with a fracture in his right hand. For the most part, this ends the open spring competition for right field, all but confirming Ben Francisco will be out there on opening day.
There's certainly a silver lining in the bad news though. Brown, after struggling in Winter ball, really struggled to start his spring. He finished 1-for-16, after starting 0-for-15. Brown is only 23 years old and has tremendous potential, but it appears some time in Triple-A would do him some good. While he may not be far off, Brown does not appear Major League ready quite yet. Heading down to the minors for some additional seasoning is a good thing for Brown to progress as a player.
Francisco has MLB experience, he's having a fantastic spring and he's a right handed batter, which the lineup lacks. Francisco will give the club more immediate help, while Brown is the future in the Phillies' outfield.
